DISCLAIMER: THE NUMBER OF COMPETITIVE TEAMS FOR THE SEASON IS BASED ON THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO TRY OUT.
Team Requirements:
AGE
Jazz-Students must be at least 7 years of age. It is recommended that students have participated in ballet in prior dance years.
Hip Hop-Students must be at least 7 years old. It is encouraged that students have jazz and/or hip hop experience.
Clogging-Students must be at least 7 years of age. It is recommended that students have participated in tap for at least 3 years. Prior clogging experience is preferred, but not mandatory.
CLASSES
Students must be enrolled in a combo class during the regular season. If your child scores high enough and makes the jazz and/or hip hop teams, they are required to take “Strength/Flexibility & Tumbling” throughout the dance season.
INTENSIVES
Students must enroll in the respective summer intensives.
Example: Trying out for Hip Hop, summer hip hop is required.
JUDGING
During tryouts, there will be judges that are given a list of things to look for. The list is below, please be sure to read and go over this list with your child so they are fully prepared. Please keep in mind that the prior dance year may be taken into consideration about the decision on if your child makes the team or not.
*Prior dance year examples may include: students’ eagerness and readiness for classes each week, students attitude towards coaches, peers, and opponents, ETC…
FLEXIBILITY
Students will be expected to demonstrate basic pre-dance stretches, all three splits, straddle stretches, bridges & pike stretches.
TURNS
Students will be expected to demonstrate their pirouettes & chaine turns. Keep in mind that pirouettes must have a high passe. Single pirouettes are required (doubles/triples are encouraged, but not mandatory). Turns need to be properly executed on both right and left legs.
FOUETTES
Students might be asked to perform their fouettés (these are not mandatory).
JUMPS, LEAPS, & OTHER TRICKS
Students will be asked to demonstrate a variety of jumps and leaps on both right and left legs.
CHOREOGRAPHY
Students will learn a short routine during the tryout. They will be judged on how quickly they can pick up the choreography and how well they can execute the routine with music.
STAGE PRESENCE AND FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
During the performance of the short routine, it is asked that students demonstrate a variety of different facial expressions. They will be scored on their dress and professional appearance. Proper dance attire (not baggy clothing) is encouraged as well as neat, pulled back hair.
FREESTYLE
Dancers will be asked to perform a section of freestyle during their tryout, during this time it is recommended to pull out their over-the-top skills.
Example: tumbling skills, Y-scales, flexibility skills, fouettés, or leaps.
*This section of the tryout is made for students to show the judges why they should be on the team!
